Madame X — Digital Emoji Mosaic is a university project created at UE Berlin that transforms John Singer Sargent’s Madame X (1883–1884) into a digital emoji mosaic to visualize the enormous scale of textile waste in Europe. Each of the 10,000 emojis represents approximately 695 tonnes of discarded clothing, making the artwork a visual metaphor for the connection between digital culture, online consumption, and physical overconsumption. With around 6.95 million tonnes of clothing discarded in Europe every year, the project confronts the hidden consequences of a fashion system increasingly driven by online shopping—77% of EU internet users purchased goods online in 2024. By reinterpreting a historic portrait through a contemporary digital language, the project raises awareness around UN Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, encouraging more conscious consumption, responsible production, waste reduction, resource efficiency, and a shift towards a more circular fashion system.
